Recently I attended a fantastic glass painting workshop at the Stained Glass Museum at Ely Cathedral. The tutor was artist and conservator Derek Hunt.
The one day course introduced participants to the process of glass painting and everyone took home a piece which had been painted and fired during the day.
First, we were shown the range of paintbrushes required to apply the paint.
After an opportunity to experiment with the paintbrushes, I chose an image of a bird drawn from a medieval design as my subject. I learnt how to outline and add tone to the image and used a Porcupine quill to draw detailed patterns into the dried paint. Finally, I added some Silver Stain to the reverse of the glass to add yellow highlights.
The workshop was a wonderful experience which gave me a real insight into the processes Trena Cox used to create her stained glass designs. I hope to attend future workshops to develop my skills.
As I walked around the Stained Glass Museum while my work was being fired in the kiln, I found myself paying closer attention to the examples of historic stained glass on display. Learning the techniques made me notice lots of details and consider how they might have been achieved.
Thanks to Derek Hunt and the Stained Glass Museum for an excellent introduction to glass painting!
